“Stuff” seems to sometimes consume our way of life. We collect things until they pile up and burst from our seams. I often ask myself, “how did I get all this ‘stuff’?” It’s years of the small well meaning things, the fun things, the things I had to have, some I didn’t, and stuff others thought I needed. Downsizing can help shed excess pounds of small stuff, but when the holidays come around, it’s hard not to want to give gifts to the ones we love the most. Gifts we know may one day turn into just “stuff.” So what to do?
What in the end do we really cherish? More often than not, it’s memories — adventures embarked on, funny stories lived, moments that took our breath away, newly learned skills, and joy filled experiences . . . experiences. So, I decided to try and give experiences as much as possible. That’s one reason why I do painting vacations - to give opportunities of another story to tell and memory to cherish, a fun time with new learned skills and breathtaking moments.
If you are struggling to find the perfect gift for your loved one this year and absolutely can not stand the Black Friday crowds, consider giving the gift of an experience. An experience your loved one can cherish with you or on their own. We have two great painting vacations coming up in 2017, one to Venice, Italy and the other to Yellowstone National Park. Both trips include fantastic art instruction as well as extra goodies that make vacations fun like enjoying gourmet food, visiting museums, sightseeing, and more. This is a gift that will never collect dust or become just another piece of “stuff.” This is a gift of adventure and creativity. Check out our vacations and see what you think!
In this video I share my favorite tools to bring when traveling internationally and nationally for plein air painting -- Tools like my favorite lightweight easel to bring, stools, paints, paper, canvas, containers, and more. I also talk about what not to bring. Check it out!
Students always ask me (Joe) about my favorite suitcases, packs, and clothes to pack when I travel to plein air paint (especially via air). I've pulled out some of my favorites to show you in this video. Check it out! I'll be posting another video about my favorite tools to pack. Look for that soon!
We're spending a little time this October talking about our June 2017 Venice instructor, Patti Mollica. Not only is she a wonderful in-person teacher, but she is an excellent instructional author as well. Patti has written three books: “Modern Acrylics," “Color Theory," and “Acrylics - Getting Started." Each one continuously receives rave reviews. Here’s a couple purchaser praiseworthy comments on each book (taken from Amazon) just to show you how much people get out of working with Patti and her techniques. I mean, how fun would it be to have individualized instruction from her in the piazzas and alongside the canals of Venice?!! A once in a life-time opportunity to say the least. Register for your spot today and snag that early bird special! Check out her books early to get a head start and some inspiration :-).

We can’t be more excited to have Patti teaching the Venice workshop in June, and here’s just one of the many reasons why: every student who takes a workshops from her loves it and her. Unequivocally loves it! Her style and method of teaching is fun, instructive, inspiring, and well student’s have used the phrases “heel-kicking” and “exhilarating” to describe the experience. She focuses on you as an artist rather than trying to have you copy her. She brings new insight into color, value, brush handling, and so much more. Here’s what some of her past workshop students have had to say, and don’t miss this incredible opportunity to learn from her in Venice!
From Patti’s students about past workshops of hers:

We have a new video out talking more about the trip to Venice, what to expect, and more on instructor Patti Mollica. Get it excited!!! We are!!
I've been reminiscing over previous trip photos from Italy as we get ready for our June 2017 Venice trip with Patti Mollica. Every trip holds the most beautiful memories! There is something so magical about combining an art workshop with a vacation. You get to exercise your painterly muscles in an amazing location learning and growing as an artist AND you get the down time to recoup between sessions while experiencing the culture and joys of where you're at. It's hard to pick a favorite vacation moment. I for sure love the wine and food of Italy - I mean, you can't beat it! I'm excited to hear Vivaldi cascading through church steeples and walk through epic museums. I'm also really excited to paint with Patti - her color palette and canvas movement is so dynamic. I also just can't wait to let the day unfold as it will. If you're tired one day you can sit, enjoy a glass of wine and take it all in on your off time - or you can traverse every canal and street to your heart's content. That's what I really love about our trips - they are artist workshops AND vacations. Take a peek at some of our past photos!
